Configuring the Activity wheel

Introduction

The Activity wheel configuration window is accessed either by clicking the Configure this device button on the I/O page, or from the Configure... button on the I/O device settings page of the protocol.

The window provides options for:

 Reviewing information about the wheel
 Renumbering the wheel
 Setting the wheel's type

Wheel information

The Activity wheel configuration window reports the wheel's current number (which can be changed - see 'Renumbering a wheel' below), and the wheel's serial number.

The serial number is useful as it identifies the wheel's version, and future versions of the wheel may include other features not present in earlier designs.

Renumbering a wheel

ANY-maze will automatically number wheels starting from 1. Thus if you only have one wheel, it will be wheel 1 and you don't need to concern yourself with wheel numbering at all.

However, if you have multiple wheels, you may need to renumber them if:

They are not in the correct physical order - for example, the wheels on your bench are numbered 3,1,4,2 (rather than 1,2,3,4).
One of your wheels breaks and you get a replacement - in this case, you would probably want to give the replacement wheel the same number as the wheel that broke.

In the first situation, where the wheels are not numbered in the correct order, you can simply use the Renumber ANY-maze Activity wheels button in the ribbon bar on the I/O page (which is included when you have 2 or more Activity wheels of the same type, rat or mouse, connected to your PC). This allows you to quickly renumber all the connected wheels by turning them in sequence.

In the second situation, where you want to renumber a specific wheel, then you just need to click the Change number button on the configuration window. This will cause the Activity wheel number window to open, where you can enter the wheel's new number. There are two rules about wheel numbering: numbers must be between 1 and 99, and all wheels of the same type (rat or mouse) must have different numbers.

Setting a wheel's type

Some early models of the Activity wheel need to be configured to either work for Rat or Mouse - more recent models are specific to Rat or Mouse.

If your device is configurable, then you should use the wheel type buttons to specify whether it is being used with a Rat or Mouse wheel. If you're not sure which your wheel is, then measure its diameter - the rat wheel is around 35cm across, while the mouse wheel is around 24cm.
