Movement detectors use arrays of photobeams to detect movement of the animal - as it moves, it breaks the beams (for this reason they're also known as Beam Break Systems). Movement detectors can't provide the same depth of information about the animal's movements as video tracking does, but they can generate reliable movement 'counts' in circumstances in which video tracking can't be used.
