ANY-maze Help > The ANY-maze reference > The Protocol page > The elements of a protocol > Inputs and outputs > Rotary encoders > Setting up a rotary encoder > Rotary encoder diameter Rotary encoder diameter
In briefOptionally enter the diameter in millimetres of the thing that is turning the rotary encoder (most commonly this is a running wheel) in the Diameter field on the rotary encoder's settings page. You don't have to make an entry, so you can leave this field blank if you like. DetailsIf you enter a diameter then ANY-maze will calculate how far the rim of the thing turning the encoder travels. Most commonly a rotary encoder is being turned by a running wheel, and the animal is running on the rim of the wheel, so the distance reported will tell you how far the animal ran in the wheel. LimitsYou can enter any value from 10 to 1000 millimetres.
