ANY-maze Help > Using ANY-maze > Setting up an experiment Setting up an experiment
There are essentially three steps involved in setting up an ANY-maze experiment: creating the experiment file, creating or loading the experiment's protocol and setting up the experiment details, such as the treatment groups.
Creating the experiment fileCreating a new experiment file is simplicity itself: Start ANY-maze and the File page will open; on the right-hand side of the page, click New empty experiment. Alternatively, if ANY-maze is already running, then simply switch to the File page (by clicking the File tab at the top of the screen), then select New experiment in the menu shown on the left-hand side of the page. Finally, on the right-hand side of the page click New empty experiment. In fact, if you plan to use an existing protocol in your experiment (see the next section), then you can create the new file and load the protocol in a single step, simply by clicking one of the protocol files listed on the right-hand side of the page - see figure 1.
Figure 1. By selecting one of the protocol files shown on File page, you can create a new experiment and load a protocol into it in a single step.
Setting up the protocolWhen you start out with ANY-maze you obviously won't have any protocols defined and therefore you will need to create at least one. However, after this you will probably find that you often want to run experiments using the same, or nearly the same, protocol as you've used before. In these cases, you can simply reuse an existing protocol, perhaps making slight alterations if they're needed. To find out more about setting up a protocol, refer to the two topics below:
Setting up the experiment detailsOnce you've created, or more probably loaded, a protocol you just need to enter a few details about this specific experiment before you'll be ready to start testing:
