Configuring an ANY-maze Audio interface

Introduction

The ANY-maze Audio interface configuration window shows information about your device, and allows you to change its ID.

Unlike most of the other members of the ANY-maze interface device family, the ANY-maze Audio interface cannot be reprogrammed.

Suppressing the LED on the ANY-maze Audio interface front panel

The ANY-maze Audio interface has an LED on the front panel which shows the status of the device; red indicates that the device is on but can't play (for example, ANY-maze isn't running or the device is not connected to DC power), while green indicates that device can play.

If the interface will be visible to the animal during a test, then you may wish to suppress this LED - perhaps the test should be performed in darkness, or you're concerned that the LED could provide visual cues to the animal. To suppress the LED, you simply need to check the Suppress LEDs on this device button in the Device information section of the configuration window.

Changing the device ID

The method of changing the device ID is the same for all ANY-maze interface devices. Full details, including what the device ID is and why you might want to change it, can be found here.

Minimizing pops when sounds start and end

If, when a sound starts playing, it is already at its maximum volume then the speaker typically makes an audible 'pop' or 'click'. This isn't usually noticeable in sound files, as their volume generally ramps up at the start, but with tones and white noise, which will begin playing immediately at the volume you have set, these pops are often quite evident. Pops can also occur when tones and white noise stop playing, as the sound will go instantly from full volume to off.

To avoid these issues you can use the option to Minimize pops when sounds start and end. With this switched on, ANY-maze will ramp up the volume of all sounds when they start playing and ramp them down when they stop - the ramping lasts just 50ms, so you probably won't notice it (although you should notice that the pops are significantly reduced). However, this does mean that sounds won't immediately start playing at their full volume, there will in effect be a 50ms delay. If you want to reduce this latency, then you should select the option to Minimize latency when starting and changing sounds, although then, of course, there probably will be audible pops.
