Installing the Operant interface M in a cage

Installation

•Replacing an existing Med Associates connection panel with an ANY-maze Operant interface M

Replacing an existing Med Associates connection panel with an ANY-maze Operant interface M

•Before removing your old Med Associates connection panel, it's a good idea to mark the connectors which plug into the inputs and outputs as either 'inputs' or 'outputs' - this just makes it easy to ensure you connect them in the right places in the new interface.
•Unplug all the components (i.e. levers, lights, etc.) from the connection panel. Also unplug anything connected to the 28V connectors and unplug the large data connector.
•Unscrew the connection panel from the base plate. Keep the screws.
•Remove the connection panel from the cage.
•Place the ANY-maze Operant interface M on the base plate in the same place as the Med connection panel used to be. Screw the interface onto the base plate.
•Plug the inputs wires from your components into input connectors. It doesn't matter which input a component connects to, but you will need to know this later, so it's a good idea to make a note as you go along.
•Plug the outputs wires to your components into output connectors. Again it doesn't matter which output a component connects to, but you will need to know this later, so it's a good idea to make a note as you go along.
•Plug any components, such as a fan or house light, which was previously plugged into the 28V connectors on the Med connection panel into a 28V connector on the interface. It doesn't matter which connector you use and you don't need to record this.

If you have multiple cages then it is a VERY good idea to connect all the components to the same inputs and outputs in all the cages. For example, if you connect the 'Left lever' in cage 1 to Input 1, then connect the 'Left lever' in all the other cages to input 1 as well.

The next steps are to:

•Connect the interface to your computer
•Connect the interface to a power supply

Installing an ANY-maze Operant interface M in a new cage

•The ANY-maze Operant interface M screws into the base plate of the cage in the back right corner. If you place the interface there you will see that it aligns with some screw holes in the top and side of the base plate. You should use the provided screws to screw it firmly into place.
•Plug your components into the input and output connectors. Each component (such as a lever or a pellet dispenser) will have one or more wires coming from it with a white connector on the end. In many cases these cables are labelled, but that is not always the case. You may need to refer to the component's manual to identify whether a wire is an input or an output. When the cables are labelled they sometime use names such as 'Operate' (which would connect to an output) or 'Feedback' (which would connect to an input).

Often it is easy to deduce where a cable should connect. For example, a simple lever will have a single cable, and as a lever is an input (it sends information IN to ANY-maze) then it should connect to an Input connector. On the other hand a cue light will have a single cable which should be connected to an output (as ANY-maze send information OUT to the light to turn it on and off).

Connecting a component to the wrong type of connector won't damage anything, the component just won't work.

Note that while it doesn't matter which input or which output a component connects to, you will need to know this later, so it's a very good idea to make a note as you go along. For example, 'Left lever = input 1', 'Right lever = input 2'.

•If you have any components that you want to always be on, for example a fan or a house light then you can connect these to any of the 28 volts connectors on the interface. It doesn't matter which connector you use and you don't need to record this. Note that these connectors are different to the output connectors and your component may not connect directly to them. You can buy adapter cables from Med Associates.
