A tutorial on the ANY-maze Operant interface

Introduction

This tutorial will lead you through some simple steps designed to teach you how to set up and use your ANY-maze Operant interface. At each stage, should you need more information, there are links to topics which describe what you need to do in more detail.

Note that although you may have more than one ANY-maze Operant interface, this tutorial keeps things simple by using only a single interface.

Before starting this tutorial, you need to get your Operant interface connected by installing the driver software, connecting the interface to your computer, and connecting it to a power supply. You can find full details on how to do this under Setting up the ANY-maze Operant interface for the first time.

Details

We're going to set up a simple experiment, with a lever, light, shocker and pellet dispenser. The light will turn on at random intervals; if the animal presses a lever while the light is on, it will get a reward; if the light is off, it will get a shock. (In fact, this is similar to the 'Operant conditioning experiment' works,  which is available using the Open example experiment option on the File page - although that example uses 'dummy' Operant cages rather than the real thing).

There are four parts to this tutorial, which you should follow in order:

 Setting up an Operant protocol
 Creating the experiment
 Running a test
 Analysing the experiment's results
