Connecting the Ugo Basile Atlantis Platform to ANY-maze

Introduction

To enable ANY-maze to communicate with the Ugo Basile Atlantis Platform system requires an interface with TTL outputs. Each platform needs two TTL outputs - one to raise it, and one to lower it.

To control a single platform, you can use the ANY-maze TTL cable. This has two connections that can both be set up as outputs, thus controlling the 'Up' and 'Down' connections of the platform.

If you have more than one platform, you can still use TTL cables (one cable for each platform), or you can use an ANY-maze interface with more than two outputs. The recommended choice would be the ANY-maze Digital interface, which has 12 outputs - all of which can be configured independently as outputs or inputs.

Other ANY-maze interfaces that can be configured as TTL outputs are:

 The ANY-maze Synchronisation interface - this has 6 outputs, so could control a maximum of three platforms. All outputs are TTL, so no further configuration is required. 
 The ANY-maze Optogenetics interface - this has 4 outputs, so could control a maximum of two platforms. Outputs on this interface are configured as laser controllers by default, so you would need to configure the interface to set the outputs you wish to use as TTL outputs.  

Connecting a platform using the ANY-maze TTL cable

Follow the TTL cable instructions to install the driver, and connect the cable to a USB port on your computer. You will then need to configure the cable to set both Port 1 and Port 2 to be 'outputs', and set the I/O port active state to 'Outputs active high'.

If your TTL cable was not supplied with a BNC connector, you can alter it yourself using the TTL cable pin-out details to connect the 'port' and 'ground' of the cable to the tip and shield of the BNC connector, respectively.

Connecting platforms using the ANY-maze Digital interface

Follow the ANY-maze Digital interface instructions to install the driver, and connect the interface to your computer using a USB cable. You will then need to configure the interface to set enough ports to TTL outputs (two ports for each platform that you want to control), making sure that you set the active state of each port to 'Active high'.

If your ANY-maze Digital interface was not supplied with BNC cables, you can make up cables yourself using the ANY-maze Digital interface pin-out details to connect the 'port' and 'ground' of the output to the tip and shield of the BNC connector, respectively.

Testing the connections

Once you've connected your cables to the 'Up' and 'Down' BNC inputs of the Atlantis Platform control box (and you have a platform connected to the control box, using the instructions in the supplied manual), you can test the platform operation on ANY-maze's I/O page. Select the interface that you're using, and select 'Output switches' - you can then control the TTL outputs on the right-hand side of this page to check that they raise and lower the platform(s) correctly.
